Earth Hour Reaches Record Numbers

Toronto's Earth Hour 2008

Landmarks across the globe cut off power as the Eiffel Tower and Arch de Triomphe (Paris), the Empire State building (New York City), the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Trevi Fountain (Italy), the Sydney Opera House, Bejing's Forbidden City, and countless others went dark for a complete hour in a global effort to highlight environmental concerns.

Even in my own backyard, the Freedom Tower and City Hall in Miami went dark, a rare sight of black gaps in a blanket of glittering lights from my towering condo view on the 40th floor. A gorgeous Miami night, this meant candlelight dinner on my balcony, after I used my oven and stove to prepare the food.

This morning it was reported that millions participated in the fourth annual event. Some 4,000 cities in more than 120 countries — starting with the remote Chatham Islands off the coast of New Zealand— voluntarily switched off Saturday to reduce energy consumption, though traffic lights and other safety features were unaffected, organizers said.
