Bitter Cold Antarctica Receives Valentine's Gift

Today, the Belgiums have bestowed a Valentine's gift to the Antarctic region. But this gift has nothing to do with the bittersweet Belgium chocolate the country is famous for. Rather, it's a science station in the shape of an alien-looking, octagonal hub on stilts. The purpose of this station is to study climate change.

According to studies, Europe as a continent is believed to make more efforts in changing habits to reverse the effects of global warming. Ironically, Belgium once had a station in Antarctica for the same purpose but closed it in 1967. 42 years later, the Belgian government has reintroduced an energy, self-sufficient polar station christened the "Princess Elisabeth".

While the Belgians partially funded the building of the station for 20 million Euros, the goal of research is an international effort. A team of scientists from Belgium, Japan, France, Britain and the United States are already working at the inaugurated station.
